Your tractor is the backbone of your agricultural operations, and it’s powerful—but it’s not invincible. It needs your help to keep it operational and efficient. We here at Tractor Pros know that can seem like a daunting task, so we’ve put together a few preventative maintenance tips to help you help your tractor. If you want to know more, or you’d like to see the tractors we have for sale, contact our store in St. Albans, West Virginia, today!

Daily Inspections

There’s no better diagnostic tool out there than the Mark One Eyeball. Your eyes are vital for finding damage, rust, and other indications of maintenance troubles. Inspect your tractor thoroughly every day before getting to work. Keep a lookout for fluid leaks and make sure your hydraulic oil, engine oil, coolant, and fuel systems are filled and intact.

Double-check your tires for damage or uneven wear in the treads, which can both lead to serious trouble. Make sure they’re properly inflated and that the tread levels are high enough, since both of these issues can impact fuel efficiency and cause skidding or even blowouts. Check the readings on your tire pressure gauge against manufacturer recommendations that you can find on the tire wall, your tractor’s owner’s manual, or the manufacturer’s website.

Monthly Maintenance

You’ll want to verify this schedule with your owner’s manual, but as a general rule you should change out all fluids in your tractor every 250 operating hours. The hydraulic filter should be replaced every 500 operating hours. Again, though, your owner’s manual might have a different recommendation. Our advice can apply to many tractors, but that manual was written for yours, specifically, so make sure to follow its advice if it contradicts ours or includes something we missed.

Proper Usage

Naturally, your tractor is going to have a much longer lifespan if you use it safely and in the way it was intended to be used. That means making sure you’re using the right tool for the job, amongst other concerns. As complex and flexible as a tractor can be in its application, these machines still have limits. Making sure you have the right model and implements or attachments for the job at hand will help you work faster, more efficiently, and in a way that keeps your tractor around for longer. This can even improve your overall efficiency and yield while keeping you and those around you safer!

We hope these tips help you and your tractor work more efficiently!
