Early History
In 1945 following World War II, KC and JC Mahindra, along with their partner Ghulam Mohammed, started a company called Mahindra & Mohammed. They were based out of Mumbai and began working in the steel industry. They started producing vehicles for Willys Jeep, which kickstarted their entrance into the world of light commercial vehicles.
In 1947, the two Mahindra brothers parted ways with Mohammed, and Mahindra & Mahindra was born. Ten years following its founding, the company was ready to go public. Its stocks hit the Bombay Stock Exchange only three years later. The company then joined with International Harvester, an acclaimed American agricultural manufacturer, to start producing tractors. A few decades later, the brand had become India’s largest selling tractor brand. They have maintained this position since the 1980s!
Mahindra Group
The company spent its formative years teaming up with other companies throughout the world to enter into more industries. This included British Telecom, Automobiles Peugeot France, International Tractor Company of India, and Maxi Motors Financial Services Limited. This resulted in the creation of Mahindra Group, an India-based conglomerate that manages all of the company’s brands and services.
By 1994, the group split up into different strategic units to improve organization. These six units were Automotive, Farm Equipment, IT, Infrastructure Development Services, Steel Trading, and Financial Services. Each branch is responsible for its own product development. The company is now a part of 22 key industries, placing in the top 20 for Fortune India 500 companies.
